Boeing in Canada: True Partners, Real Value
Air Canada 777-300ER

Since 1919, The Boeing Company, the world’s largest aerospace company has been a key partner in the Canadian commercial and defence industries. Boeing employs more than 1500 highly-skilled employees in Winnipeg, Richmond (B.C.), Montreal, Trenton (Ontario) and Ottawa who work in support of the company’s major business units – Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) and Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS).

Boeing facilities in Canada produce parts, components, assemblies and software applications for all of the company’s commercial jets. The Winnipeg division in Manitoba produces nearly 1,000 end item composite parts and assemblies for all current 7-Series Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Major products include wing-body fairings, engine strut forward and aft fairings and landing gear doors. This division is Canada’s largest aerospace composite manufacturing entity and is a Tier 1 supplier to the 787 Dreamliner, Boeing’s newest commercial airliner, building the engine strut forward and aft pylon fairings for this breakthrough airplane.

In Richmond, B.C., AeroInfo Systems Inc. is a leading provider of sophisticated maintenance-planning software applications for commercial and defence customers. Acquired by Boeing in September 2000, the company’s industry-leading technology adds a new dimension to Boeing’s growing portfolio of aviation services and has been involved in the C-17 support systems through the BDS Sustainment Data Systems project and the Technology Insertion Program. They will also help provide support for the recently announced CH-147 helicopter fleet for Canadian Forces. Its software is used to schedule aircraft from line operations to heavy maintenance depot checks and to plan, package and optimize the maintenance tasks prior to depot execution.

West Jet 737-700

Boeing acquired Carmen Systems, a Crew Management and Logistics software solutions provider in the transportation industry based in Göteborg, Sweden, in June 2006. With this purchase, Boeing also picked up more than 70 Carmen Systems employees based in Montreal, Quebec. This office and the rest of Carmen Systems are now part of Jeppesen, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Boeing Commercial Aviation Services that will integrate, support and grow the business.

Aviall Services, also a wholly-owned Boeing subsidiary, has a significant presence in Canada. Acquired in 2006, and part of Boeing’s Commercial Aviation Services, Aviall provides global market coverage for general aviation, airlines and military customers, and is the largest diversified aircraft parts distributor in the world. They provide industry leading global operations services and support.

In Canada, Aviall has six customer service centers/stocking locations: Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg; Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax. Key accounts include ACJazz, Canadian Helicopters, Standard Aero, WestJet, CanJet, Bombardier, and Bell Helicopters.

Canada is also home to one of the largest international supplier bases for Boeing, including more than 200 suppliers spanning every region of the country. Canadian partners provide aerospace parts for all Boeing commercial aircraft models and defense programs including the V-22 and CH-47 rotorcraft, F/A-18 and F-15 fighter aircraft, P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, the C-17 Globemaster III strategic airlift, as well as aircraft trainers. Combined with the Boeing facilities, this supply network makes a significant contribution to the Canadian economy by generating approximately $1 billion in business annually.

More than a dozen Canadian carriers, from the biggest to the smallest, operate Boeing products. Canada’s leading airlines, Air Canada and WestJet, have new Boeing airplanes on order. Air Canada is upgrading its fleet with new 777s and 787 Dreamliners. Air Canada currently operates both the 777-200LR and 777-300ER. WestJet continues to grow with their all-Boeing fleet of new 737-600s, -700s and -800s.

In the defence sector, Boeing has a major role in the ongoing transformation of the Canadian Forces by modernizing 80 of Canada’s CF-18 fighter jets with a two-phase avionics upgrade program that began in 2001. L3Com Canada is the prime contractor to Boeing and carries out the installation process for this program at its facility in Mirabel, Quebec. Boeing also provides the Canadian Navy’s all-weather Harpoon missiles, several of the Anik series satellites, and supply chain services to fleet support programs.

On February 2, 2007, the Canadian Department of National Defence signed a contract with BDS to procure four Boeing C-17 Globemaster IIIs to modernize its defence forces airlift fleet. Boeing delivered all four C-17s to Canadian Forces within 15 months of the contract signature, and the aircraft were immediately put into service for military and humanitarian missions.

CH-47

On Aug. 10, 2009, the Canadian Department of National Defence announced the contract award of 15 Boeing CH-47F Chinooks, to be designated CH-147 in Canada, to meet Canada’s current and future domestic and international missions requiring medium-to-heavy helicopters. Both the C-17 and CH-147 contract awards required 20 years of in-service support for the aircraft.

Boeing is a global leader in developing and implementing robust industrial partnership programs with more than 40 countries worldwide. Given the breadth and depth of our relationships both globally and domestically in Canada, Boeing is fully committed to meeting the Government of Canada’s Industrial Benefits requirements.
