The environment is an important issue for us all, and at Boeing, we understand that responsible environmental leadership is crucial as we serve our customers and as our business and industry continues to grow.
Boeing is committed to providing the most fuel-efficient airplanes to our Canadian customers and continuing to improve the environmental performance of our facilities while supporting the communities where our employees live and work.
In 2014, Air Canada began taking delivery of the 787 Dreamliner, which is 20 percent more fuel efficient than the airplane it replaces. Air Canada and Westjet have ordered the new 737 MAX, which will be 14 percent more fuel efficient than today’s most efficient single-aisle airplane, the Next-Generation 737.
Our Boeing Winnipeg facility plays a key role in the production of the 737 MAX. In 2013, Boeing announced an expansion of that facility to construct the airplane’s one-piece composite acoustic inner barrel on the newly designed engine nacelle inlet. The inner barrel is one of the latest quiet engine technologies that will be employed on the 737 MAX to help reduce the operational noise of the airplane by up to 40 percent.
Our Facilities
Accelerating the environmental performance of our facilities is a high priority for Boeing Canada. Our Winnipeg facility has earned the international ISO14001 certification for its robust environmental management system, one of more than 50 Boeing sites to do so.
In 2013, the Winnipeg team added new light-emitting diode (LED) technology to upgrade some of the lighting features for the site’s new parking lot. The new lights not only provide more illumination but also result in lower energy use and costs.
Industry and Community Partnerships
Boeing Canada works with our industry and community partners.
Boeing and RER Hydro of Montreal have signed an agreement with the government of Quebec to provide more than 40 hydrokinetic turbines that will generate about 9 megawatts of clean, renewable power. Once the project is completed, the St. Lawrence River near downtown Montreal will have the world’s largest river-generated, hydrokinetic turbine farm.
Boeing Canada each year also participates in a series of education and volunteering activities in schools and in the community focused on the importance of environmental protection and preservation.
